User Manual
First Launch
When you open the app for the first time, you are prompted to create an account or sign in. You can create an account with an email address and password, or sign in directly if you already have an account.
After signing in, the app guides you through profile setup: Enter your name, age, gender, height, and current weight. The app then calculates your calorie targets and macro nutrient goals based on this information.
The Dashboard
The Dashboard is the main screen of the app. It shows you:
- Calorie ring: How many calories you have consumed today compared to your goal.
- Macro nutrient breakdown: Protein, carbs, and fats in grams.
- Burned calories: Calories burned through workouts.
- Habit matrix: Your daily habits (Premium only). Tap a habit to mark it complete.
- Today's entries: List of meals and workouts you have logged today.
Pull down on the screen to refresh and load new data.
Adding Entries
Tap the "+" button to create a new entry. You can choose between:
Log a Meal
By text description:
- Tap the text field and describe your meal in natural language (e.g., "spaghetti with bolognese sauce and parmesan").
- Tap "Analyze with AI".
- The AI analyzes your input and estimates calories, protein, carbs, and fats.
- Review the results and tap "Save" to add the meal.
By photo:
- Tap "Take a photo" or "Pick a photo".
- Take a photo of your meal or select one from your photo library.
- The AI analyzes the photo and estimates the nutritional values.
- Review the results and tap "Save".
By voice:
- Tap the microphone icon "Or say what you ate".
- Dictate your meal description. As you speak, the AI will analyze the meal.
- Tap "Stop" when you are done.
- Review the results and tap "Save".
The displayed nutritional values are AI estimates and may differ from actual values. For accurate information, consult product packaging.
Log a Workout
- Select "Workout".
- Enter the name of your workout (e.g., "Running").
- Enter the duration in minutes.
- Estimate the calories you burned, or let the app use a default value.
- Tap "Save".
Log a Measurement
- Select "Measurement".
- Enter your current weight.
- You can also record waist circumference and height (optional).
- Tap "Save".
The app tracks your weight over time and shows you your progress.
Viewing, Editing, and Deleting Entries
Viewing an Entry
Tap a meal or workout in the Entries list or on the Dashboard. The detail screen shows:
- The name and time of the entry
- Total calories
- For meals: macro nutrient breakdown with percentages
- For workouts: duration in minutes
- Individual food items (if available)
Editing an Entry
- Open the entry (tap on it).
- Tap the "pencil" icon (Edit).
- Edit the details (name, calories, macros, time, etc.).
- Tap "Save".
Deleting an Entry
You can delete an entry in two ways:
- In the Entries list: Long-press on an entry and select "Delete" from the menu.
- In the detail screen: Tap the menu icon (three dots) in the top right and select "Delete". Confirm the deletion.
Browsing Entries
The Entries tab shows all your meals and workouts, grouped by date (newest first).
Pull down to refresh and load new data.
Habit Tracking
With Premium, you can track daily habits (e.g., "drink 8 glasses of water" or "meditation").
Setting Up Habits
- Open the Dashboard.
- Tap the "Edit habits" button on the habit matrix.
- Tap "+" to add a new habit.
- Enter a name and description.
- Tap "Save".
The habit now appears on the Dashboard and can be checked off daily.
Apple Health
FoodNoteBook can connect to Apple Health to automatically sync your body weight.
Connecting Apple Health
- Go to Settings > Apple Health.
- Tap "Connect Apple Health".
- Approve access in the Apple Health app.
- Your weight history will be imported.
Updating Apple Health
Tap "Sync now" to import your current weight from Apple Health.
Disconnecting Apple Health
Tap "Disconnect" to end the connection with Apple Health.
The app only reads your body weight and does not write other data to Apple Health.
Settings
The Settings tab offers the following options:
Premium
Shows your current plan (free or Premium). Tap "Unlock Premium" to purchase Premium.
Profile
Shows your name, calorie goal, and macro nutrient goals. Tap to edit these.
The following fields can be edited:
- Name: Your display name in the app
- Calorie goal: Your daily calorie target in kcal
- Protein goal: Your daily protein target in grams
- Carbs goal: Your daily carbs target in grams
- Fats goal: Your daily fats target in grams
- Current weight: Your current body weight in kg
- Weight goal: Your target body weight in kg
- Height: Your body height in cm
Redo Goal Setup
Tap to recalculate your calorie goals and macro nutrient goals based on your current information.
Replay App Tour
Tap to see the tutorial again on how to use the app.
Help & Support
Tap to open the support form. Here you can send a message to support.
Apple Health
Connect to or disconnect from Apple Health (see Apple Health section above).
Imprint
Shows the contact information of the operator.
Privacy Policy
Opens the privacy policy in your browser.
Terms of Use
Opens the terms of use in your browser.
Account
Shows your email address and a "Log out" button. Tap "Log out" to sign out.
Premium
FoodNoteBook Premium offers the following additional features:
- Unlimited entries: More than 3 entries per day
- Detailed analytics: Long-term trends for calories, macros, and weight
- Habit tracking: Track daily habits
- Body measurements: Record and track waist circumference and other measurements
- Priority support: Email support with priority
Purchasing Premium
- Go to Settings > Premium.
- Tap "Unlock Premium".
- Select a plan:
- Monthly: 3.99 EUR per month
- Yearly: 29.99 EUR per year (save 18%)
- Confirm the purchase with Face ID or password.
Managing Your Subscription
- Go to Settings > Premium.
- To cancel your subscription, tap "Cancel Subscription".
- Access continues until the end of the current billing period.
Restoring Purchases
If you have reinstalled the app or switched to a new device:
- Go to Settings > Premium.
- Tap "Restore Purchases".
- The app checks with Apple which subscriptions are connected to your Apple ID and restores them.
When Something Doesn't Work
- Make sure you have an internet connection: Most features require an active internet connection.
- Close and reopen the app: This fixes many temporary issues.
- Check available storage: Go to Settings > General > Storage and make sure you have enough space.
- Contact support: Go to Settings > Help & Support and send a message with details about the issue.
